Jujitsu

Jujitsu, the "gentle art", is a practical method of self-defense. It is a grappling art, with an emphasis on defusing threats by avoiding an attacker's violence and controlling their limbs and joints.

Jujitsu traces its origins back through more than two thousand years of development to ancient Japan. In recent decades, eager practitioners of a particular philosophy of Jujitsu called Budoshin have introduced it to the United States. These students and teachers practice primarily in community settings, just like the Alexandria YMCA.

Budoshin Jujitsu emphasizes escaping danger as its foremost goal; thus, it works to promote peace and security in the community where it is taught. Because it focuses on skillfully applying the strongest muscles of the body against the weakest muscles of the attacker, Jujitsu can be helpful for anyone, regardless of strength, size or speed. And because safe, enjoyable practice is the foremost goal of a Budoshin Dojo (school), the classes are fun and rewarding for everyone.
